Unreal Gold is a first-person shooter game with an extensive single-player campaign, which was first released in 1998, and then, a year later, in 1999, was re-released together with its official expansion, Return to Na PaLi, as the Unreal Gold edition. This version of the game is completely free and basically consists of an executable that automatically downloads and installs the original ISO.
The easiest way to play Unreal
Epic Games, the original developers of Unreal Gold, have made the game available so anyone can download it for free from the Internet Archive. This executable, which was created by the OldUnreal non-profit community, allows you to download and install the game in the directory of your choice in a quick and easy way. So, instead of having to download the game's ISO and install it manually, you can take care of everything at once. Best of all, Epic Games itself has given the go-ahead for this version.
The classic Unreal, as good as ever
Once you've installed Unreal Gold, you can start playing by simply double-clicking on its executable. Even a quarter of a century after its release, this game is still as special as ever. As veteran players will remember, in the single-player campaign, you play as Prisoner 849, who's trying to survive on a totally unfamiliar planet inhabited by the Skaarj, a race of reptilian aliens with advanced technology. Throughout the adventure, you'll find the diaries of other humans, through which you can start to understand what happened on this planet.
One of the most legendary FPS, totally free of charge
Unreal Gold is an outstanding first-person shooter that, by the early 2000s, had already sold over 1,000,000 copies. A measure of success which was well deserved. Not surprisingly, to many younger gamers, the name Unreal only rings a bell because of the famous Unreal Engine, but the truth is that this engine was developed specifically for this game. This is the original title that led to the creation of that engine. And, advances in technology aside, it's still a lot of fun.
